Adenoids are similar to the tonsils in being gland of
lymph-like tissue in or near the back
of the throat. Tonsils are visible in the back of the
throat on each side of the uvula while the adenoids are not
typically visible through the mouth and are situated high in
the back of the throat, behind the roof of the mouth about
even with the nose. Enlarged adenoids can cause
difficulty in breathing, may affect the ears, speech may be
altered, and may include a sore throat. The breathing
difficulty can result in snoring and loss of sleep with
resulting chronic exhaustion and irritability.
Typically adenoids, like tonsils, diminish in size as
Adenoids and tonsils are known to help prevent severe
bacterial or viral infections by trapping these and
preventing more damaging infections in the body. In
the process the glands can become inflamed and swollen
themselves. In some cases this can become a chronic
infection of the adenoids or tonsils and they will remain
swollen for a longer period of time. The protection these
glands provide is proven for babies and infants while some
medical studies suggest that this protection tapers off as
children grow older. Some question this information.

Oils, blends & products
Oils & Blends:
Breathe, Lemon, On Guard
Essential oils based
products: Life Long Vitality supplements
Cypress, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Oregano,
Peppermint, Purify, Rosemary.
For moderate swelling 2 - 3 drops of On Guard on the
bottoms of the feet at least 2 or 3 times daily. Dilute with
FCO or other carrier to help application. Diffuse
Breathe at nighttime to help with breathing.
For more acute situations On Guard can be supplemented
with Oregano on the feet or On Guard and/or Oregano can be
applied topically near the adenoids in the area around and
below the ears. Dilute with FCO to avoid discomfort
from the "hot" oils. For diffusing Breathe can be
supplemented or rotated with Eucalyptus. If Oregano is too
strong consider Cypress or Rosemary.
Some suggest mixing the oils with water in a spray bottle
and spraying in the back of the throat.
For chronic situations the Life Long Vitality supplements
should be used. The above protocol followed as well as
2 - 4 drops of On Guard (Oregano, Cypress or Rosemary)
taken twice daily in a capsule or in juice if it is a child
that cannot swallow capsules.
Experiences and Testimonials of others
Cortney - Our ear, nose, and throat
specialists is recommending us to have our 4 year old sons adenoids to be
are causing him congestion and problems in his ears.
can I do with the oils to help us avoid this surgery? Any
Rob - I would do anything and
everything to avoid a adenoidectomy for my child. Adenoids and tonsils play a
large part in our health and fighting off infections. I would apply Purify daily on
neck over tonsils. I would do a daily lymphatic
massage using Grapefruit and Peppermint with strokes down the length of the
neck, under the jaw and around the ears. Rotate weekly or more often with
Breathe and Eucalyptus. I would get him to drink 3
drops of On Guard twice daily in juice. He should be drinking lots of
water (with Lemon) to
flush system. Have him cup and inhale or use
a nasal inhaler three times daily with Eucalyptus and Peppermint or
Breathe. (do not underestimate to power of aroma inhalation)
Cut out pasteurized milk in

It is a lot of attention and work. But
essential oils can help. follow this protocol till the
inflammation is gone, then adjust your protocol as necessary to
maintain good health.
Sunny - Sorry about coming late to this
party (thread). My son had his adenoids out at a young age
and still, to this day, gets congested (he's 40 next year).
So, I'd say surgery isn't always the 'fix all' it's
supposed to be.
Pat - Have you tried a regiment of
oils yet? Breathe, Lemon and On Guard on the bottom of his feet, diffuse
Breathe or Eucalyptus in his room at night. When he goes to sleep put Breathe
under his nose. Adjust the oils according to your feelings for his wellness. I
too would try to avoid surgery.
Anna - Does anyone
have any oil recommendations for draining excess fluid in
the ears? My 3 year old has a constant build up of fluid in
her middle ear which is causing mild hearing loss. When the
fluid drains, her hearing is perfect, but the fluid is not
draining. I have been able to ward off infection with
continuous use of Melaleuca and Basil behind her ears. She
used to have ear tubes (before I had oils...would NEVER
recommend them now...they only caused more problem). Her ENT
is on the verge of suggesting having her tonsils and
adenoids out. I so do not want to go this route. My first
thought is Grapefruit because it is for fluid
retention/edema. But I welcome other suggestions...please.
Janthia – Cypress
Lorie – Rosemary as well.
Alma - My nine year
old daughter's tonsils and adenoids are really large
and cause blockage when see sleeps at night. We did a
sleep study and have seen specialists. The tonsils and
adenoids are not swollen due to infections. She
never gets throat or tonsil infections. We were
planning a surgery next month to remove them. Her lack of
good sleep, or at times lack of any sleep, is severely
interfering with her normal functioning. She is
exhausted and miserable. We do use oils to help her
get a better sleep.
I know Oregano will help with infections and
inflammation, etc. I have used it and had much
success. My acquaintance suggested a drop of Oregano a
day in back of mouth. I would appreciate help from
anyone with knowledge of this. Thanks. Alma
Jan - Be very careful putting Oregano in
the mouth neat. It is a very HOT oil and requires much care.
You might try putting it in a capsule with FCO. I usually
take two to three drops and fill the rest of the capsule
with the FCO. I would start out with one drop, once a day
for 21 days. Then rest for 7 days. See if she still needs
it. Also, you can put the oil on topically on the throat and
back of neck and adinoids-right behind ears,...but
again...use the FCO. Be careful not to get any oil near the
front of ears. Use a roll-on applicator with the mixture in
it. I would go one drop Oregano to 30 drops FCO or two drops
to 50 FCO. Try it topically first because it is hot hot!!
Brooke - My brother-in-law had
horrible problems his whole life from snoring and other
tonsil related problems. Just last year he went to
some sleep specialists and another adenoid and tonsil
specialists. When all the tests were done - it was
found that he was not getting hardly ANY oxygen during the
night because of the size of his Tonsils/Adenoids!
They said it could potentially cause severe problems to his
health later on because of the continued lack of oxygen to
his brain and other organs every night. He went ahead and
had them taken out and has noticed quite a difference. (and
so has his wife - who can now get more sleep at night!)
One of the things he was told was that some people just have
abnormally large Tonsils and Adenoids for their bodies.
Just FYI. Hope that helps.
Dian - I have had problems with
my tonsils most of my life until a few years ago. You
could see them on the outside of my throat, they were that
large. I was told by my physician that our
tonsils are the receptors of any infection in our body.
I was never diagnosed with having infections or "bugs" and
was a relatively healthy child otherwise. I am
grateful that my parents left mine in, otherwise I would
have been very ill most of my life. If your
daughter can tolerate it, make a weak mixture of FCO
(fractionated coconut oil) and On Guard and spray on her
tonsils and put on the outside of her throat and glands.
She should also be taking the LLW (lifelong wellness
trio) to help her body get rid of any infections she might
have. Be intuitive. What feels right for
you to use on her? I hope this helps.
