Bunions

Parts of this were taken with permission from Essential Oils Overview and Reference Guide, published by: The Family Tree, 2008

Summary

BunionA bunion is a bony protrusion on the side of the big toe or in some less common cases on the outside of the small toe.  The protrusion at the joint of the base of the toe can become irritated, swollen and painful.  As the protrusion becomes larger the toe bends toward the second toe causing further sources of irritation.  There appears to be multiple causes of a bunion.  Genetically the foot may be shaped such that normal activity puts excessive pressure on the big toe eventually causing a bunion.  Some suggest footwear that does not fit properly may also put excessive pressure and cause a bunion.  The protrusion may be excessive bone structure or a fluid sac called the bursa that becomes inflamed.  In any case the deformity of the toe makes it difficult to find proper fitting footwear, is not a pleasant sight, and can be very painful.

Suggested protocols:

At this point we do not have experiences where someone has reversed the formation of a bunion with essential oils.  The experiences on the following tab speak of those that have had bunion surgery and the positive benefits of using essential oils for more rapid healing after surgery.

If the bunion is the result of an inflamed bursa of the toe then consider the essential oils suggested for bursitis.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

Cheryl - My friend had bunion surgery almost a month ago and still has swelling in her foot. She was skeptical about EO's but was desperate and let me put a few drops of grapefruit and lemongrass on her toe, foot and behind her knee.  We applied them at 4pm for a "test drive" to see how she reacted.  Nothing really happened so I came back at 9 pm to apply for bedtime.  I added a few drops of helichrysum because she mentioned her doctor. said she might have the start of phlebitis.  She said at 10:30 pm, 1 am and again at 4 am she had a burning sensation internally all the way from her toe up to her knee.  She was not happy.  Does anyone know if this is a common reaction or if I should have done something else?

Brooke - I have personally experienced something similar, and I recently met someone who had a similar story.  Helichrysum is a very unique oil.  I personally had pulled all the tendons or ligaments or something on the top of my foot when I fell down some stairs a couple of months ago.  I couldn't even put on a shoe!    I used several oils (lemongrass, marjoram, white fir, and a couple of others), and they worked great!  Within three days I was fine. Well, last week I got up wrong, and the top part of my foot pulled again.

This time, I put helichrysum on the top of my foot right before I went to bed.  It started hurting SO bad.  I put Deep Blue (which has helichrysum in it) and a few others on thinking it was just crazy it would start to hurt!! (because it hadn't before)  It took about an hour, but the pain finally subsided, and I went to sleep.   The next morning I woke up, and my foot did NOT hurt at all.  It was perfectly fine, and I had no pain from the re-injury to the top of my foot.

The same thing happened to to my friend - she had hurt her foot doing fitness stuff, went to her first oils meeting and they applied helichrysum.  It hurt so bad all the way home - she thought they were crazy using oils.  Until the next morning when the pain was GONE!!She became a believer in oils.  My understanding is the helichrysum is able to go in and basically "re-knit" tissues together.  Sometimes there is pain associated with that, sometimes there isn't.  Don't give up because, maybe that is what the oils were doing - their JOB!  It takes time to figure out what works best for everyone, and if they will be patient, the oils can and will work!

I hope this helps your friend.  I am so grateful I have been persistent, because it is paying off!

Editor - A positive experience about bunion surgery.  Note the doctor's reaction.

Bev. G. -  I have a good experience to share.  My sister recently went through 2 different bunion surgeries (about 7 weeks apart).  After the first week (because her foot was wrapped), she put Deep Blue all over her foot (except where the incision was.  She put frankincense or helichrysum on the scar). At her first appointment with the podiatrist, he was in shock.  There was very little bruising and no swelling. "I've never seen anyone heal so fast!  Whatever did you do?"  She showed him her Deep Blue roll-on.  He was flabbergasted, "I've never seen anything like it in all my years of practice."  She was thrilled.  I thought I would share, in hopes that it might help someone else out there.
