Summary
Frostbite - This is the condition wherein extremities are exposed to very low temperatures and the skin and underlying tissue can become frozen or damaged from the extreme cold. Most susceptible are fingers, toes, ears, nose, and cheeks as they get directly exposed. Light frostbite will damage the outer skin and only be an irritant whereas heavier frostbite will blister and require healing and beyond this there may be damage to blood vessels in the dermal and hypodermal lavers of the skin.
With frostbite the exposed skin will be light in color, cold, and lack sensitivity to touch. As the skin warms it will become reddened and very painful.
Chilblains - This is the inflammation of the small blood vessels in the fingers, toes, ears, nose, and/or cheeks as they warm after being exposed to very low temperatures. There can follow blistering or swelling with redness and itchy to the affected areas. Those affected can be cured but then may find a reoccurrence in years to follow.
