Insect Bites

Stings and bites from insects and spiders vary in how they are inflicted and the degree of harm they may cause.  Most bites may produce discomfort but, beyond the redness and swelling, are relatively easy to deal with. Some bites such as black widow and brownInsects recluse spider along with ticks, scorpions, and a few other insects can be very harmful and need to be treated very seriously. There are some folks that have severe allergic reactions to certain types of bites, such as bees, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets, and should be prepared with an anaphylaxis kit.

For the most common of bites from mosquitoes, bees, wasps, fleas, chiggers, non toxic spiders a common outcome will be redness and swelling in the area and usually accompanied with some itching.  In these common and simple situations a few simple steps and essential oils can stop further infection and relieve the discomfort.  Some simple suggestions are:

For bees and others that may leave the stinging mechanism (stinger) in the skin gently rub over the area with a fingernail or such to remove this source of infection.

Lightly wash the area with soap (OnGuard foaming wash is excellent) and water.

Avoid scratching as much as possible.

Apply oils directly to the bites often to limit infection and relieve pain and itching.

If redness and/or pus drainage continues seek professional help.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

Lauren - Does any one know of a good oil to use after a bug had bitten you? Something to stop the itch and/or help it go a way faster?  Thank you soooo much for your help.

Rob - Peppermint, Lavender, Purify, On Guard, Clove and Melaleuca are all oils that I've had or heard of having success with depending on the type of bite or the person’s reaction.

Sharon - I use Purify.  It stops the itching almost instantly and the swelling seems to disappear as quickly.  My granddaughter got stung by a bee on the bottom of her foot under a toe.  She was in quite a bit of pain, so I dropped some Purify on it.  You could see the white path the poison was taking.  It was already 3/4 of an inch out, and the Purify stopped it in its tracks. She said that it was numb. She went on her way.  She is not a little one, she's 15 and I can't play the "now, doesn't that feel better?" mommy tricks on her.  She was totally amazed, and now asks for it when she gets 'skeeto bit!

Pat - There are quite a few oils that help with that. Oregano is great for pulling out the poison also Basil, Lemon, even Terra Shield.

Penne - Which oil(s) will help take away the itch of an insect bite?  I was thinking lavender & peppermint.  Am I on the right track?

Jessica - I prefer basil for bites...and stings.

Kathy - I've also used Purify to ease the irritation of nasty critters bites. But your thinking is great!

Pat - Purify is incredible as is Terra Shield and most of the citrus oils.
