Varicose Veins

Parts of this were taken with permission from Essential Oils Overview and Reference Guide, published by: The Family Tree, 2008

see also Blood clots, DVT and superficial phlebitis

Veins in the body can become weakened with time and unusual pressure. This can lead to them becoming enlarged and twisted oft times with visible results. Increased pressure aVaricose veinsnd weakness is more common in the lower extremities and can come from aging, being overweight, during pregnancy or from continuous standing for long hours during the day. There is evidence of a heredity component as well and seems to be more prevalent among females. Also there can be a congenital defect in the valves of the veins that can lead to varicose veins.

The common mechanism that allows the veins to become twisted and enlarged is the small one-way valve that is an integral part of all veins. This valve helps the return flow of blood to the heart. If it becomes weakened for any of the reasons previously mentioned blood flow does not occur in normal fashion and blood can pool and distort the veins. If they are near the surface the visible symptoms occur.

The severity can range from a mild situation called spider veins, the more visible and protruding varicose veins and then even more serious concerns with deep vein thrombosis. Besides the visible symptoms commonly recognizable there may also be swelling, pain and itching, discoloration and skin changes. Even before visible symptoms some will experience aching or burning sensations in the legs after prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Minor injuries or cuts may in these area can lead to unusual bleeding.

Some simple preventive measures can help such as regular exercise, minimizing extended periods of standing or sitting without relief and resting with the legs elevated periodically. Mild massage with essential oils as described under the tabs above will hasten progress.

Suggested protocols:

Under the Experiences/Testimonials tab above you will find other's experiences with varicose veins, spider veins, vulvar varicosities, and inflamed veins. Two specific protocols are given:

Varicose and Spider veins:

·  30 drops Cypress,

·  20 drops Lavender, and

·  10 drops of any of the citrus oils

·  in 2 oz coconut oil

Blend applied morning and night.  Improvement in about a month. At that point applied daily for another 3 or 4 months to become about 10% of what they had been.

Vulvar varicosities and inflammation of veins:

·  50 drops Helichrysum

·  in 8 oz all-natural lotion base (VCO could be used)

Apply two time daily.  Very positive results in six weeks.  Can be combined with varicose veins protocol above.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

Lisa - Can someone tell me what oils would be good for spider veins especially on the face.

Jan - I successfully used a massage blend of

·  30 drops Cypress,

·  20 drops Lavender, and

·  10 drops of any of the citrus oils

·  in 2 oz coconut oil

to reduce a lot of spider veins around my knees and ankles to almost none at all. I applied the blend morning and night I began to see improvement in about a month. Once that happened, I only applied it right after my shower and they continued to improve for another 3 or 4 months to become about 10% of what they had been. I later stopped using it to see what would happen. After several months, they began to slowly return, but they virtually disappeared again very soon after I resumed the after-shower routine. After 5 or 6 years of using the blend, they are still quite minimal, although they are not completely gone.

Rob - Helichrysum, Cypress, and Lemongrass are oils I would consider to diminish spider veins. Helichrysum is most generally suggested for varicose veins but I have heard of success with the other oils.  I would apply several times daily neat or with VCO carrier (with Lemongrass definitely use a carrier).

Anonymous - Any suggestions for varicose veins?

Pat – For varicose veins consider the same blend as that suggested for spider veins:

·  30 drops of Cypress

·  20 drops of Lavender

·  10 drops of any citrus oil

·  in 2 oz. of coconut oil.

Gently rub the blend over the vein and up towards the heart above the vein. Apply morning and evening and be consistent.  You should see improvement in about one month if the veins are small and longer for larger veins. I know some who have taken up to six months, but had great success.

Another oils user suggested adding Helichrysum to the blend, she said it helped her a lot. I would think that would help if the veins are swollen or inflamed.

Jessica – Also recognize that the protocol for varicose veins will be the same protocol as that for vulvar varicosities and "inflamed" veins in other discussions.

Pat - Another friend, after using the protocol above, suggested adding Helichrysum to the blend, she said it helped her a lot. I would think that would help if the veins are swollen or inflamed.  Pictures are included below of her success using Helichrysum.

Also Cypress is mentioned frequently.  That's because it has a valuable effect as a vasoconstrictor on varicose veins and hemorrhoids.  "It is beneficial in conditions of excess fluid, such as bleeding, nosebleeds, heavy menstruation, heavy perspiration, cough and bronchitis, hemorrhages and fluid retention."

The technique used with Helichrysum was to mix 50 drops of Helichrysum in 8 ounces of an all-natural lotion base and applied to her legs for six weeks.  The photos below show the amazing difference after six weeks!
